Do You Need AML Registration to Use TinyTax?

TinyTax is a self-service filing tool and does not require any professional accreditation, regulatory registration, or AML supervision to use. This guide explains what AML supervision is and whether it applies to your situation.

Does TinyTax Require AML Registration?

No. TinyTax does not require users to be registered with any AML supervisor or hold any professional qualifications. You sign up, enter your company's figures, and submit — no accreditation needed.

What Is AML Supervision?

Anti-Money Laundering (AML) supervision is a UK regulatory requirement for businesses that provide certain professional services, including accountancy and bookkeeping services to clients. Under the Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Transfer of Funds Regulations 2017, these businesses must register with an approved supervisory body (such as HMRC, ICAEW, ACCA, or CIMA).

When Does AML Supervision Apply?

AML supervision typically applies if you run an accountancy practice or bookkeeping business and provide services to third-party clients for payment — for example, if you file tax returns or prepare accounts on behalf of clients as part of a business.

AML supervision generally does not apply if you are a director, shareholder, or officer filing returns only for companies you are directly involved in. Filing for your own companies is not providing regulated accountancy services to third parties, and HMRC's AML guidance does not typically require registration for that activity alone.

Filing as a Professional Accountant

If you use TinyTax to file on behalf of clients as part of a paid accountancy or bookkeeping service, you may already be required to register with an AML supervisor — independent of which software you use. TinyTax does not change your regulatory obligations in either direction.

Not Sure Whether You Need to Register?

HMRC publishes detailed guidance at gov.uk/guidance/money-laundering-regulations-who-needs-to-register.
